Chanakya
Chanakya has stated that we can learn from the animals:
We can learn one good quality from the lion and the crane; six from the dog; three from the ass, five from the crow; and four from the rooster.

- The lion teaches us how to perform our work with virility.
- From the crane we should learn how to restrain our senses,
- The dog is able to eat large amounts of food and yet satisfied with little food. He goes to sleep easily and yet wakes quickly at the slightest sound. The dog is devoted to his master and is heroic. These are the six qualities.
- The ass carries burden without fatigue he doesn't mind heat or cold and is always satisfied.
- Five from the crow it uses one eye while examining an object scrutinizingly. It is fearless and shameless while collecting food—in other words, it does what is necessary and always alert and puts forth exertion in its endeavors.
- From the Rooster for remaining quiet, and then, at the right time, place, and circumstance we should properly go about our business.
